A gentle soul who brought so much happiness into the world.
Born on November 2, 2005, Kabosu was rescued from a puppy mill that was shutting down. She was one of 19 Shiba Inus abandoned at that time and was fortunate to be adopted by Atsuko Sato,
a Japanese kindergarten teacher, in 2008. Atsuko named her Kabosu after the round, citrus fruit, reflecting the dog's round face.
Background
Kabosu's rise to fame began in 2010 when Atsuko posted a photo of her on her blog. The image captured Kabosu's contemplative and quirky expression, which quickly became the face of the Doge meme.
The meme exploded in popularity around 2013, featuring Kabosu's face surrounded by captions in Comic Sans font, often with humorous, broken English phrases like "much wow" and "so scare."
Despite her internet fame, Kabosu's life remained grounded. Atsuko used her blog and Kabosu's newfound popularity to raise awareness about animal shelters and the plight of dogs from puppy mills. They have been known for their charitable efforts, including donating proceeds from auctions, such as the famous couch Kabosu sat on, to causes like the "Save the Children" foundation.
Kabosu lived a remarkable life, reaching the age of 18 years, which is notably long for her breed, as Shiba Inus typically live around 12 to 15 years. In her later years, Kabosu faced health challenges, including a diagnosis of leukemia and liver disease. Nevertheless, she continued to inspire many with her resilience and the loving care provided by Atsuko.
